Perhaps he and others like him should 'Just Say No.' The problem is that they now have few allies to stand up for them.
Obama may bring back the draft or a backdoor draft calling it 'youth service.'
But if the economy continues on as is, the vast masses of unemployed youth will have few options as to how to make a living and take a chance on the military.
War Vet, 50, Stunned By New Deployment
Former Soldier Last Served During 1st Gulf War
Reported by Jeremy Finley
The last time Paul Bandel, 50, saw combat was in the early 1990s during the Gulf War."(I was) kind of shocked, not understanding what I was getting into," said Bandel.
"Here he's 50 years old, getting his AARP card, and here he's being redeployed with all these 18-year-olds," said Paul's wife, Linda Bandel.
"I can understand, say, 'Here, we have this assignment for you stateside. Go do your training,'" said Paul Bandel. "But, 'Hey, here's a gun, go back to the desert.
'"Involuntary recall allows the military, regardless of age or how long someone has been out of service, to order vets back into active duty.
"Anger's not the word. I was more concerned about the financial impact it's going to do. My pay's probably cut in half," said Paul Bandel.
"Right now, I'm just in disbelief because it's like the disbelief that this could be happening 15 years after being out of the military. It's like a dream or a nightmare," said Linda Bandel.
The veteran is dusting off his old uniforms and torn between his duty to his country and obligations as a grandfather.
"I certainly never thought I'd be going back there at this point in my life," said Paul Bandel.
The last missile system the veteran was trained to operate is no longer used by the military.
Calls to the Army and the Pentagon about how many men and women in their 50s are being called back to duty were not returned Wednesday.
Paul Bandel will be deployed overseas until 2010.
His wife plans to move in with her elderly parents until his return.

- Expand Service-Learning in Our Nation's Schools: Set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year. Develop national guidelines for service learning and give schools better tools both to develop programs and to document student experience.
- Expand Youth Programs: Create an energy-focused youth jobs program to provide disadvantaged youth with service opportunities weatherizing buildings and getting practical experience in fast-growing career fields. Expand the YouthBuild program to give 50,000 disadvantaged young people the chance to complete their high school education, learn valuable skills and build affordable housing in their communities.
- Require 100 Hours of Service in College: Establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.
- Promote College Serve-Study: Ensure that at least 25 percent of College Work-Study funds are used to support public service opportunities instead of jobs in dining halls and libraries.
Expand to Meet Military Needs on the Ground:
Obama and Biden support plans to increase the size of the Army by 65,000 soldiers and the Marine Corps by 27,000 Marines. Increasing our end strength will help units retrain and re-equip properly between deployments and decrease the strain on military families.
Integrate Military and Civilian Efforts:
The Obama-Biden administration will build up the capacity of each non-Pentagon agency to deploy personnel and area experts where they are needed, to help move soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines out of civilian roles.
Create a Civilian Assistance Corps (CAC):
Obama and Biden will create a national CAC of 25,000 personnel. This corps of civilian volunteers with special skill sets (doctors, lawyers, engineers, city planners, agriculture specialists, police, etc.) would be organized to provide each federal agency with a pool of volunteer experts willing to deploy in times of need at home and abroad.
The quasi military draft in Barack Obama's Budget? by Karen Hill
Obama Calls for US Military Draft
In a statement that has been glossed over by the MainStream Media (and even most conservative bloggers), US Presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama said on September 13th that his job as president would include demanding that the American people recognize an “obligation” for military service. “If we are going into war, then all of us go, not just some,” Obama declared at an evening forum on national service at Columbia University in New York City.
No redeployment of former troops.
Bring all of our troops home.
The wars are lies.
