Spc. Russell Hercules Jr, 22, was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery Friday afternoon, after graveside and funeral home chapel services with full military honors.

During the funeral service, Sgt. Monty Lash from Fort Campbell read citations giving the fallen soldier the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

"The Bronze Star is for soldiers who have gone beyond the call of duty; service with distinction," said Lash. "The Purple Heart is for soldiers injured in battle."

Soldiers from Fort Campbell honored their fallen comrade through off-and-on showers, with a 21-gun salute, and gave Hercules' wife, mother, father and sister American flags. {more}

Kind words, a bronze star, a purple heart, an American flag, a widow, a fatherless child.

The prizes of war.

  1. Maxims of Napoleon Bonaparte : On war

    A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon.

    Small comfort for the family.

    A man like me troubles himself little about a million men.

  2. The troops just wanted a college education and to learn how to fly a helicopter. I can't believe people are shooting at them. They should throw flowers and give them hugs. Those towelyban ingrates they are taking foreigners in their country with guns and bombs way too serious.
