We have mixed emotions. Dick Cheney lives on with a replacement blood pumper. He never had an actual heart. His was sold a very long time ago in exchange for something he decided was more valuable.
Cheney's crimes are well documented. To paraphrase one of his partners, there are both the knowns and the unknowns. Kay Griggs and Cathy O'Brien added to the Cheney narrative the perverse nature of the man. His fingerprints and DNA are all over 9/11.
Unlike many others, blackmail may have never been an issue. Cheney obviously loved what he did and gave the threats, not received them.
His reprieve means that there is the slightest hope that he will face justice in the world he created but it's not likely. Taking Cheney to task could lead to a chain reaction involving others at the highest levels right up to this present time so it won't happen.
Karma takes patience. The idea of a thousand rebirths and agonizing deaths of a dick may appease some but most of us don't have the patience or think we don't. Those who believe the most in eternal punishment for the likes of murderous criminals will probably be the first to sing Cheney's praises upon his breathing his last breath. Neither option appeals to those who want the instant gratification of revenge in the here and now.
Had Cheney died on the operating table I guarantee there would have been much celebration. Much like the long delayed celebration of the end of others including Rockefeller and Kissinger, we are forced to wait. The sad thing is that even their end will not dissolve their deeds. It will only reinforce the notion that everyone has to die and sometimes evil is perceived as winning.
Unfortunately, as one psychopath goes by the wayside there's another to take his place. Perhaps few will have the blatant arrogance of Cheney but they will still do the same things over and over again unless stopped. Ignorance and apathy are their enablers. In a way we are all a Dr. Frankenstein. We create the monster but we don't know how or have the will to destroy it.
He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
- Albert Einstein
Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all -- the apathy of human beings.
- Helen Keller
At least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity, idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political idols.
- Aldous Huxley
There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.
- Henry David Thoreau
The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary: men alone are quite capable of every wickedness.
- Joseph Conrad
It is a sin to believe evil of others, but it is seldom a mistake.
- H. L. Mencken
