While some Southerners have welcomed the recent influx of immigrants and diversity to Middle Tennessee, others are vowing to fight the "third world invasion."
With the global refugee crisis at its worst in 20 years (currently 45 million displaced people around the world, according to the United Nations), people facing war, political persecution and poverty in their native countries are on the move, desperately looking for new places to make home and sometimes finding their way to the Nashville Metro area.
While we should accommodate and get along with those who are already here, the brunt of our efforts should be focused on addressing the root cause of this forced migration: Western imposition of neo-liberal capitalism to every corner of the world for the benefit of the 1 percent.
We must change U.S. imperialist foreign policies and end perpetual wars against resource-rich countries, stop backing dictators who serve the needs of our multi-national corporations instead of their own people and no longer force countries to adopt economic policies that fill the pockets of our elite while starving the native masses (through IMF, World Bank and central banks).
Our policies are causing destablilization throughout the world, allowing corporations to easily take over foreign markets while importing refugees as cheap labor to boot.
To end this oppression and bring peace, justice and prosperity for everbody, we must stay focused on the source of the problem and not get caught up in differences in our race, language and faith, which only keep us divided and conquered.
